παράπτωμα

from παρά “beside” + πτῶμα “a fallen thing” ergo “a body, corpse” from the verb πίπτω “I fall”, hence παράπτωμα “false step, slip, blunder, defeat, transgression, trespass”

In Scripture παράπτωμα is used in the latter senses of “transgression, trespass.” The picture is of us coming face to face with the Law, and not being able to stand before it. Being confronted with God’s holy standard, we fall beside it, we slip and fall down, and the fall is mortal - we become corpses in the face of the Law. “καὶ ὄντας ἡμᾶς νεκροὺς τοῖς παραπτώμασιν συνεζωοποίησεν τῷ Χριστῷ” (Ephesians 2.5). “The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life!”

Examples: Matthew 6.14-15, Romans 5.15, Ephesians 1.7
