In the Roman world, a natural-born son could be disowned and disinherited. A legally adopted son could not. His status was irrevocable. (Romans 11.29)
Our Father does not merely pardon slaves. He brings them into His Family, with all the legal and familial standing of sons—fellowship with the Father, membership in his household, and the full inheritance belonging to His children. We are heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ. (Romans 8.17)
