Vocabulary

Chapter 23

  • vs.32 - κακοῦργος (κακός, ἔργον - “bad deed”, hence doer of bad deeds) evil-doer, criminal
  • vs.33 - ἀριστερός left hand - derives from euphemism based on superstition. ἀριστερός is the irregular superlative of ἀγαθός, literally “best” because the Greeks considered the left unlucky. In Greek augury, looking north, the signs boding ill came from the left.
  • vs.34 - διαμερίζω (διά, μέρος - “through (split) part”) to divide, apportion and distribute
  • vs.36 - ἐμπαίζω (ἐν, παίζω - “play as children (παῖς) into”) to mock
  • vs.38 - ἐπιγραφή (ἐπί, γράφω - “write upon”) superscription
  • vs.41 - ἄτοπος (α, τόπος - “not in place”) out of place, untrodden, odd; paradoxical, absurd
  • vs.45 - ἐκλείπω (ἐκ, λείπω - “leave out”) to fail, desert, Eng. derivative “eclipse”
  • vs.45 - καταπέτασμα (κατά, πέτομαι - “fly down”) veil, curtain
  • vs.47 - ἑκατοντάρχης (ἑκατόν, ἄρχω - “ruler of 100”) commander of a hundred; centurion

Chapter 24

  • vs.2 - ἀποκυλίω (ἀπό, κυλίω - “roll from”) to roll away (from)
  • vs.2 - μνημεῖον (μιμνῄσκομαι - “remember”) monument, memorial
  • vs.4 - ἀπορέω (α + πορεύομαι - “not going (through)”) to be at a loss

The Lord's Prayer

(Erasmian)
